Your wedding dress is a timeless keepsake of that special day that you want to remember forever, share with your children and, maybe, pass down to your daughter. By taking a few simple steps you can relive that special moment for a lifetime.

The first steps for protecting your soon to be heirloom should be taken before your wedding. You need to purchase the necessary materials to protect your dress as soon as you take it off. Purchase a non-dyed, unbleached cotton sheet and wash it in hot water (without detergent). After you take your wedding dress off you must wrap your dress in the aforementioned sheet. Then store the dress in a flat position until you can have it dry cleaned. Be sure that you do not store the dress in a plastic dress cover, as plastic restricts air flow and can result in acid residue stains and/or mildew on your dress.

Before you can store the dress you must have it professionally dry cleaned by a cleaner that specializes in wedding dresses. After dry cleaning the dress you will need to buy a vacuum sealed storage box and archival-quality, acid free tissue paper. Then, take off all metal buttons, pins and adornments and store them separately to avoid stains from oxidation. Fold the dress and putting tissue paper between the folds to avoid getting wrinkles in the dress, then place the dress inside the vacuum sealed storage box. Place the box in a cool, dry place where it is protected from sun light and smoke. Finally take the dress out periodically to check that it is clean and dry and has not been contaminated.
