Let's Talk Botox

E-mail

Botox. What a controversial word! While everyone knows what it is... would you do it? Are there side effects? All vanities aside, here are the facts:

Botox, otherwise known as the purified form of “botulinum toxin A,” became popular in the year 1989. Besides treating wrinkles, the neurotoxin treats strabismus (crossed eyes), uncontrollable blinking, and spasms of the neck and shoulder areas. Some people also use it for treating migraines and glandular issues (underarm sweat).

So let’s talk about the cosmetic side of botox…

For a smoother “between the eyebrow” look and the vanishing of crow’s feet, a person would sit for the procedure, which takes no more than 15 minutes to happen. In some instances the patient will have a numbing cream application so the procedure will hurt less than a mosquito bite. The patient is ordered to not lay down for 4 to 5 hours until the product sets in. In about 3- 4 days the effects will be seen. The smoothing effect last up to 6 months which is no wonder why many who try it get several touch ups throughout the year. The way botox works is that once injected it freezes the facial muscles and limits the contractions.

What it’s made of?

Botulinum toxin A is the active ingredient of a bacteria named Clostridium botulinum which is known for producing food poisoning and even death. The substance is also an ingredient in rat poison. The lethality of the product is high when consumed orally. It is important to say that just one vial of botox can kill a human if ingested. Not to be taken lightly if a person should choose to undergo this procedure, it should only be administered by a registered physician.

Side effects

While the procedure is as popular as a nose job (but less invasive) there are side effects to watch out for, which may include flu-like symptoms, nausea, respiratory problems, facial pain, and allergic reactions.

Now that you know the pros and cons of botox make sure that you treat your body like a temple and remember that you only have one. If you do choose to try the procedure make sure you check on the credentials of your physician as $500 a procedure is not a cheap mistake.
